The Benefits of Reflection

My contention: We spend too much time doing stuff and not enough time reflecting upon the stuff we do.

Think about your day. Is it made up of meetings, making phone calls, answering phone calls, checking e-mails, sending e-mails,attending events, etc?

When was the last time you paused to reflect on your progress? Do you set aside time for planning, preparation, and prevention? One of the key distinctions I've lived by for the past 4 or so years has been the concept of Quadrant II thinking as taught by Stephen Covey in the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People.

Covey teaches that when you find yourself too busy to spend time planning and reflecting, that is precisely when you need to do it the most.

It never ceases to amaze me how much anxiety is relieved when I take a step back and reflect.

Some good questions to ask are:

i) What activities am I doing? What is taking up most of my time?
ii) How do these activities move me towards my goals?
iii) What are the 2 most important goals for me to achieve this week?
iv) What are the 2 most important goals for me to achieve this year?

The answers to these questions will help you to re-priortise your activities to ensure you're actually going in the right direction.

If you're feeling overwhelmed this week, my advice is to grab a coffee, take a break, and reflect.
